ULAT 2.26

  1. It's 5 o'clock in the morning and John Richardson is waking up. He gets up every day, from Sunday through Saturday, at 5 o'clock.

  2. John goes downstairs and enters the bathroom to wash up.

  3. Carol doesn't get up. She's sleeping.

  4. John enters the bathroom and, first, he takes a shower.

  5. Next, he combs his hair.

  6. After combing his hair, John puts on shaving cream and shaves.

  7. Finally, before eating breakfast, he gets dressed.

  8. Every morning, at exactly six o'clock, Mr. Richardson enters the kitchen to have coffee and read the newspaper.

  9. At 6:15 sharp, John gets up and goes upstairs to his office.

  10. From exactly 6:15 to 6:30, John does the family's accounting and pays the bills.

  11. Next, from 6:30 to quarter to seven, John writes letters and plans his day.

  12. Finally, from 6:45 to 7:00, John studies French.

  13. John gets up again, goes downstairs and, at 7:05 exactly, enters the kitchen. Carol is waiting for John at the table. She is irritated because she must wait for John a long time before he comes to the table.

John : "Good morning. Did you sleep well? How are you this morning? Do you have any plans for today?"

Carol : "John, you know, every morning you say exactly the same three things. Did you sleep well? How are you? So what are your plans for today?"

John : "What's wrong with that? What do you want? Don't you like to talk with your husband?"

  14. Carol : "John, that is not 'talking'. You're just repeating the same questions every day. You're not listening to me. Really, I don't know if you even know me."

  15. John : "O.K. If you prefer, I'm not going to talk."

John sits at the table and eats his breakfast in silence.

  16. Finally, he finishes his breakfast and gets up.

John : "Well, I'm leaving. I'm going to play tennis this morning with my friend, Sebastian."

  17. Carol : "What? You can't play tennis today!"

    John : "Why not?"

Carol : "John, today is Sunday. You should stay at home with us. You should help me and spend time with the children."

  18. John : "Carol! I work all week, Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, I need to get out a little and to rest. I need to play a little bit and spend time with my friends."

Carol : "I too work all week, John, with the children, and I need some time with my husband.

  19. John : "Carol, I'm at home every day of the week after work from Monday through Saturday."

Carol : "John, you know, when you're home, you do three things and that's all. You watch TV, you go running in the park and you work in your office. You don't spend time with the children. You don't help me and you don't talk to me.

  20. John : "Carol, I don't have much time right now. I must meet Sebastian in a half an hour. Can we talk about this later?"

  21. Carol : No, John. We must talk now. John, I'm worried about you. You don't know your children well enough and your children hardly know you. You work too hard. You're a slave to your schedule. Everything is planned. You have no time for us.

John : "Carol, don't exaggerate. I like my work and I just don't like to lose time. I'm an efficient man, but I'm not a slave."

Carol : "Let's see, John. Tell me your schedule. What do you do on a typical day and at what time do you do it?"

  22. John : "O.K., if you want, but I don't have much time. I leave home at five minutes to seven. I take bus number 59 to Lille at 7:02. The bus leaves me at the train station at 7:22."

    Carol : "O.K. Continue..."

  23. John : "I have to run to the train because it leaves the station at 7:25."

  24. John: "The train arrives in Valenciennes at 8:15. I walk from the station to the university and I arrive at my office at 8:30 and I have half an hour to prepare for my classes."

  25. John: "Then I have class from 9 o'clock until noon."

  26. John: "At noon, I eat lunch quickly and then I return to my office to prepare my classes at 12:20."

Carol : "But you don't have other classes until 2 o'clock. Couldn't you take more time to eat?

John : "No, Carol! It's impossible! I have to work. I can't rest during the day. I have a lot of work to do!"

  27. John : "Then I finish classes at 5 o'clock and I come back home by the train and the bus and I arrive at 6:30. So you see, Carol, I'm home every day starting at 6:30!"

Carol : "Yes, but as soon as you arrive home, you take the car and you go buy a newspaper."

John : "After a long day at work, I'm tired, Carol! What do you want? I want to rest a little bit."

Carol : "Well, you could sit down in the kitchen and talk to me, at least a little, while I prepare dinner or you could play with the children. But, go ahead..."

  28. John : "Carol, that is not fair! You know that I spend time with the family. After dinner, you know that I take a walk with the family every night at 7 o'clock."

Carol : "Yes, but at what time must we return home?"

    John : "I don't know."

Carol : "Yes, you do know. Tell me."

John : "Well...O.K...we must return home at 7:20."

  29. Carol : "And why must we return home at 7:20? Why not 7:30 or quarter to eight?"

John : "Because we must help the children go to bed. They must be in bed at quarter to eight."

  30. Carol : "And why quarter to eight?" Why not 8 o'clock or 8:15?"

    John : "I don't know."

Carol : "John, tell me the truth!"

John : "O.K....because I have to go running in the park by 8 o'clock."

  31. Carol : "And why must you go running by 8 o'clock? Couldn't you run a little later?"

John : "No, I can't. I must prepare my classes at 9 o'clock in my office."

  32. Carol : "And why must you prepare classes by 9 o'clock? Couldn't you start at 9:30?

John : "No, because I need an hour to prepare my classes and I have to go to bed at 10 o'clock. I have to get up by 5 o'clock and I need at least seven hours of sleep!"

Carol : "John, why do you live like this? Why do you work so hard?"

John : "Well, I work hard for you and the children."

    Carol : "And why?"

John : "Why? Well...I...I..I do it because I love you."

Carol : "Do you really love us, John?"

John wakes up and gets up at 5 o'clock. It's Sunday. John takes a shower, combs his hair, shaves and gets dressed in the bathroom. Next, he drinks coffee and reads the newspaper in the kitchen.

He goes to his office in the house at 6 o'clock. He writes letters, thinks about his job and studies French.

At 7:05, John goes to the kitchen to eat breakfast with Carol, his wife. Carol is angry because John works too much in his office and doesn't talk with her. She thinks that John shouldn't work on Sunday. John eats in silence and then gets up from the table. He's going to play tennis with a friend.

Carol isn't happy. She thinks that John should stay home with his family. He says that he should know his children better. John says to her that he must play and talk with his friend.

Carol answers that she is worried about him and that John doesn't know his children because he works a lot. John says that he likes to work. Carol wants to talk with John about his daily routine, but John doesn't want to talk. However, his wife insists.

From Monday through Friday, John says that he takes the bus at 7:02 and goes to the train station in the city. He takes the train at 7:25 and arrives in Valenciennes at 8:15. He walks to the university and arrives at his office at 8:30. He has classes from 9:00 to noon. Next, he eats lunch very quickly, in just 20 minutes, and returns to his office. Carol thinks that John should rest a little and that he shouldn't return so quickly to his office, but John says that he can't relax because he has a lot of work to do.

John explains to her that she returns home at 6:30 from Monday through Friday. Carol says to John that he shouldn't sit down and read the newspaper. She thinks that he should talk with her in the kitchen o that he should play with the children.

John reminds his wife that he walks with the family every night after dinner, but Carol doesn't understand why the family must return home at 7:20 sharp. John explains that it's because he wants to put the children in bed at 7:45 because he wants to run in the park at 8:00 and that he must work in his office at 9:00. Carol can't understand why John can't work later in his office at 9:15 or 9:30. John tells her that he must go to bed at 10:00 because he needs seven hours of sleep and that he must get up at 5 o'clock in the morning.

Carol wants to know why he works so much. John answers that he works to help the family and that he loves his family. But Carol asks him if he really loves his family.
