Why must I use the ULAT gestures?

After you have seen a word or expression presented by means of a moving or still image, you will see the instructor perform a gesture or hear him say a word or sentence corresponding to that gesture or image. If you are asked to imitate that gesture, it is very important that you actually do so and that you use it every time the ULAT instructs you to do so. Why?

  1. Performing a gesture or "motor activity" at the same time you repeat a vocabulary word will enormously increase your ability to remember that word.

  2. Secondly, the gesture or image itself presents the word's meaning and enables you to say and think of it without the need for inner translation to English.

  3. Thirdly, the gestures themselves enable you to review your vocabulary, and even some grammar, no matter where you are (though you should refrain while driving your car!). You don't need a book or your computer with you to review.

  4. Finally, the gestures can be used by your teacher as "prompts", allowing him to guide you when you are "stuck" without the need for recourse to English or to provide the answer for you.
